Danse Danse 2010-2011 season A first annual Fundraising Campaign for Danse Danse
Montreal, 5 April 2010 – On April 7 Danse Danse will officially launch its annual fundraising campaign for 2010-1011. With an overall objective of $100,000, the donations received will serve to support two innovative programs that are central to Danse Danse, Get Youth into Dance and Carte Blanche. Established more than 10 years ago, Danse Danse is an important organization whose mission is to promote the growth and development of contemporary dance by presenting both new pieces and works in its repertoire. Passionate and committed, co-artistic directors Clothilde Cardinal and Pierre Des Marais provide through the Danse Danse series an outstanding showcase for artists and audiences alike by presenting striking works by local and international companies.
An objective of $100,000 to rise to exceptional encounters between audience and artists. The donations will support two original programs created to help youth and artist’s new work. “In the current economic context, it is essential that the Montreal community be active in its support for culture, which is a distinctive feature of Montreal’s identity. The talent of our artists not only stirs and touches audiences, enriching our lives, but their creative force also raises the profile of Montreal on the international stage, and in recent years dance has become a dynamic calling card for Montreal as a centre for culture. Dance, however, suffers from a severe lack of funding. Every donation is important, and we hope that the business community and the general public will respond generously to our appeal for donations,” said the chairman of the Danse Danse board of directors, Me Louis-François Hogue, an Principal partner with Fasken Martineau.
2 innovative programs, 2 unique ways to support youth and contemporary dance Get Youth into Dance Launched in 2005, this program enables young people to attend free of charge (in choice seats) dance performances that are part of the Danse Danse series. This clientele (adolescents aged 14 to 17) is recruited from among young people who are in difficulty or from disadvantaged backgrounds. Since its inception, more than 1200 adolescents have participated in the program which has actors Chantal Fontaine and James Hyndman as spokepersons. The objective of the fundraising campaign is to enable 1000 teenagers to attend a dance performance during the 2010-2011 season. Carte Blanche Launched in 2006, the purpose of the Carte Blanche program is to stimulate the creation of new dance pieces by supporting local choreographers at a crucial point in their careers. Choreographers who have benefited from the program include Natasha Bakht in 2006, Héléne Blackburn in 2008, José Navas in 2009, Danièle Desnoyers and Myriam Allard/ Hedi Graja of La Otra Orilla for El12 in 2010. Danse Danse thus provides greater artistic means at their disposal for the development of new works. The objective of the fundraising campaign is to give artists co-production shares as they develop a new work in 2011-2012.
