Top Picks of 2009 – A quick look back at last year’s season.

Many Danse Danse presentations made the 2009 year-end top picks by the dance journalists at La Presse.

ALINE APOSTOLSKA

Audacity
Sutra, by Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui at Danse Danse, for its audacity and its energetic impact, even if the set design was not up to par. It tied with the highly innovative La belle au bois dormant by Mats Ek for GBCM.

Enchantment
S, by José Navas at Danse Danse, for its masterly and sensitive geometric finesse.

STÉPHANIE BRODY

Incredible Dancers
The most remarkable were the Ballet du Grand Théâtre de Genève dancers, performing constantly off balance in the Danse Danse presentation of Selon désir by Andonis Foniadakis.

Danse Danse presents Le Carré des Lombes

The Danse Danse series will start the second half of its 2009-2010 season with the eagerly awaited new work Dévorer le ciel, a piece for six dancers by Danièle Desnoyers conceived during the course of a “carte blanche” opportunity offered by the presenter. The Montreal choreographer, whose work stands out for its exuberant movement and exquisite soundscapes, used the occasion to place the body back at the centre of her creative approach.

Dévorer le ciel will be danced by Pierre-Marc Ouellette, Catherine Viau and Alan Lake, a trio much appreciated for their performance in Là où je vis. They will be joined by Bernard Martin, who for eight years danced for the La La La Human Steps company, and Emmanuelle Bourassa Beaudoin and Karina Champoux, two performers seen in the Dave St-Pierre works La Pornographie des âmes and Un peu de tendresse, bordel de merde. Staging is by Guy Cools, and lighting by Marc Parent.

The latest dance piece by Danièle Desnoyers, Dévorer le ciel, will make its première on the Centre Pierre-Péladeau stage on January 14, 15 and 16 at 8 p.m.

Two new pieces by José Navas

Danse Danse audiences will soon be welcoming back one of their favourite choreographers. José Navas and Compagnie Flak are once again part of the Danse Danse series, presenting premières of a double program in Montreal. The first is the Canadian première of Villanelle, a solo piece choreographed and performed by Navas, followed by the  another Canadian première with S, a work for eight dancers recently back from a second European tour. S is inspired, indeed driven, by Erik Satie’s hypnotic Gymnopédies and Gnossiennes, performed onstage by French pianist Claire Chevallier. It is always a delight to rediscover Navas, in this instance both as a solo performer and as a choreographer presenting his first piece for a large stage. Compagnie Flak will be on the boards of the Centre Pierre-Péladeau from November 25 to 28, 2009 for 4 exceptional performances.

Danse Danse and Place des Arts present the last 3 performances of Amjad by Édouard Lock and La La La Human Steps

A final encounter with an astounding work
Salle Wilfrid-Pelletier, Place des Arts
April 30, May 1 and 2, 2009

Acclaimed in the world’s major cultural centres, choreographer Édouard Lock’s Amjad will end its extraordinary run in Montreal. After two years of crisscrossing the planet, Amjad has gained a remarkable maturity and radiance. Among the choreographer’s most accomplished works, Amjad was presented in some forty European cities, as well as in Singapore, the United States, Japan, Mexico and Israel. Lock’s company La La La Human Steps will perform Amjad at the Salle Wilfrid-Pelletier of Place des Arts on April 30, May 1 and 2, 2009 at 8 p.m. A last chance to see this exquisite masterpiece (The Straights Times, Singapore).

Amjad
Created with collaborators Gavin Bryars, David Lang and Blake Hargreaves (music), John Munro (lighting), Armand Vaillancourt (sets) and Vandal (costumes), Amjad is a whirlwind of images and movements of breathtaking virtuosity. Since its premiere in 2007, the work has gone from one triumph to the next.

Whether it be in Montreal, Vancouver, Vienna, Berlin, Seville, Budapest, Paris, Rome, Stockholm, London or Los Angeles, audiences have been treated to virtuosity in all its splendour” (Upsala Nya Tidning, Stockholm),the latest stroke of genius from this choreographer” (Wiesbadener Kurier, Frankfurt). A stunning tribute to Swan Lake and Sleeping Beauty, Amjad has been described as “a febrile, fantastical dream, a fragmentary swirl of iconic sights and sounds from Tchaikovsky's great ballets, which goes way beyond imagining” (The Times, London).

Don’t miss this final opportunity to see Amjad, one of Édouard Lock’s most splendid creations, performed by the fabulous dancers of La La La Human Steps at the Salle Wilfrid-Pelletier of Place des Arts on April 30 and May 1 and 2, 2009 at 8 p.m. Tickets start at $38.50 (taxes and fees extra) and are available at the Place des Arts box office (514.842.2112) / www.laplacedesarts.com.

12th season of Danse Danse
7 ways to experience today’s dance

Montreal, March 10, 2009 – Danse Danse is launching a 12th season full of discoveries, surprises, new works and return visits! True to its mission, the series directed by Clothilde Cardinal and Pierre Des Marais is an exciting selection of works, reflecting the extraordinary richness of contemporary dance. First up, in its first appearance on a Montreal stage, is the young troupe led by Hofesh Shechter, a choreographer who has won over London—and  the world—in record time. We will then see the eclectic Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui, accompanied by seventeen Buddhist monks from the Shaolin Temple; the crowd-favourite José Navas and his latest work for group; Danièle Desnoyers, the inspired choreographer whom Danse Danse gave “carte blanche” for her new creation; the new work by the Quebec flamenco troupe La Otra Orilla; the Brazilian company Grupo Corpo, whose return has been eagerly awaited; and finally the remarkable Christopher House and the Toronto Dance Theatre.

In addition…
In 2009-2010, Danse Danse is increasing the number of performances for the majority of shows: there are now Wednesday performances for many of the companies. Matinées have also been added for the productions of Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui / The monks of the Shaolin temple and Grupo Corpo, on Sundays at 2 p.m.

Back By Popular Demand: Up Close Chats and Meetings with the artists
Because of the public response to the “Up Close with Danse Danse chats” preceding the shows last year, we are continuing this popular initiative. These mini-conferences, which are relaxed and free of charge, consist of brief talks on the artists, companies and works on the program, given by experts in the field. 0 Also by public demand, Danse Danse is continuing its activity “Meet the Artists”. Following the Friday performances, audience members can exchange a few words with the choreographers and dancers. What an opportunity!

Subscriptions and Website
Danse Danse is once again offering two flexible subscription formats (complete series or à la carte series of  4, 5 or 6 shows), along with a range of prices to suit everyone’s budget. The website of Danse Danse contains a mine of additional information on the works and companies. Feel free to ask your brochure for all the details on ticket prices and benefits offered exclusively to subscribers.

So like us, sit back and enjoy the pleasures of dance!

Wen Wei Dance

In November 2006, the Canadian troupe Wen Wei Dance thrilled audiences with its performance of Unbound. Described as “sublime” by Le Devoir, the work received two Isadora Awards from the Vancouver Dance Centre for Excellence in Choreography and Excellence in Performance (for dancer Alison Denham). Well-known for its impeccable technique and incandescent red sets, the troupe directed by Wen Wei Wang is returning with Three Sixty Five, a choreography inspired by Vivaldi’s Four Seasons.

Three Sixty Five pushes the boundaries of choreographer Wen Wei Wang’s own cultural traditions in order to reveal the range of human conditions and emotions that occur at any time in any one’s own life. Highly kinetic movement expresses joy, passion and sexuality. To this end, rather than following the usual sequence of seasons the work is structured in collaboration with the deconstructed electronic version of Vivaldi’s well known score, reworked by Giorgio Magnanensi and featuring cellist Peggy Lee.

“One compelling image follows another. The stage picture evolves and dissolves, in concert with the music […] Three Sixty Five is a bold and considerable achievement.” (The Vancouver Sun)

“As complex and simple as life, beautifully performed.” (Edmonton Journal)

“The performers carve the air with pristine precision as they negotiate Wang’s sensuous physical distortions.” (The Globe and Mail)

Rubberbandance Group
