A co-presentation with Place des Arts

“Like razor-sharp blades, his dancers quickly carve their way through the variations and pas de deux of these classical ballets […] The dance of Édouard Lock intrigues and dazzles to the very end.” (LesCulturelles.net)

Two years after its creation in Montreal, Amjad returns to the city after crisscrossing Canada, Europe and the United States. Hailed in the major centres of contemporary dance, Édouard Lock’s latest creation “unites two icons of classical ballet: Tchaikovsky’s Swan Lake and Sleeping Beauty […] Lock dismantles them both, piece by piece, distilling their essence for four musicians and nine irrepressible dancers. On fidgety points, with windmilling arms, their bodies bristle in the most gruelling of amorous passions: dance” (Le Monde, Paris). The intoxicating power of its images is transmitted by dancers of astounding virtuosity. Created in conjunction with Gavin Bryars, David Lang and Blake Hargreaves (music), John Munro (lighting), Vandal (costumes) and Armand Vaillancourt (set design), “Amjad is a force of nature: beautiful, surprising and often frightening” (Vancouver Sun), “one of Édouard Lock’s most accomplished works” (La Presse Canadienne).

Founded in Montreal in 1980, La La La Human Steps owes it international reputation and numerous awards to the unique choreographic language developed and constantly reinvented by the company’s founder and artistic director, Édouard Lock. Altered structures of ballet within a complex amalgam of choreography, music and film are the main ingredients of the Lock style. The result is an impression of perpetual distortion and renewal, inciting viewers to see the body in movement in entirely new ways. The company’ dancers, all ballet-trained, are continually forced to question and redefine themselves; their performances range from limit-testing virtuosity to the most exquisite lyricism.
